How does the SmartSkin CO2 laser work?

SmartSkin CO2 laser As a fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, the laser’s light splits into tiny beams and penetrates the skin at a controlled depth. The targeted cells are vaporized by the heat and the areas around the tiny beam are only heated. The entire skin area benefits from the procedure but only the targeted areas are treated. Since SmartSkin is a fractional laser, recovery time is less than a non-fractional laser. The reason for this is that less skin has been directly treated. Dr. Klainer will review the procedure during your consultation.

How Does SmartSkin resurface and rejuvenate skin?

Since it is an ablative laser, it removes the top outermost layer of the epidermis (skin).The dermis is treated with heat from the laser light and begins to remodel itself by stimulating the growth of new collagen. Collagen is the protein the gives skin its youthful and healthy appearance, as well as volume. As we age and lose skin volume, lines and wrinkles form.

How long are treatments?

Generally the treatment will take about 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the location. During the procedure we will make you as comfortable as possible since your skin will become very warm. Most skin can be treated just once to get significant results. After treatment, patients look as if they have deep sunburn. Downtime is usually about 4-5 days with full recovery after 10-14 days. During the first few days of your recovery, you many experience itching, slight swelling, peeling and dryness. You will be given skin care products and instructions to help alleviate any discomfort, as well as help and speed the healing process. Once Dr. Klainer meets with you to discuss the details of the SmartSkin CO2 laser, he will be able to give you an estimate of how long the procedure will take.

When will I see results?

After recovery, you will notice significant improvements but may see results for several months as collagen growth and rejuvenation continues. The final results can last for years but do keep in mind that the aging process still happens so a good skin care system is recommended.
