CO2 Laser Procedure Description

Your face says a lot about you. For some, wrinkles and inconsistent skin tone are conditions that can cause concern. With CO2 Laser treatments, skin can be rejuvenated and even improve collagen production.

The CO2 Laser uses energy absorbed in water within the cells to cause cell vaporization. This creates a decrease in facial wrinkles while improving skin tone and stimulating collagen production.

Many different types of lasers are used for facial rejuvenation. The CO2 Laser is an ablative laser, meaning that it destroys the superficial layers of the skin resulting in collagen shrinkage and synthesis. The result from CO2 Laser treatments is equivalent to a second-degree burn. However, the benefits of CO2 Laser treatments are a tightening of the skin (similar to that of a surgical facelift) and collagen stimulation that lasts for up to a year with only a single treatment. The relative downside of CO2 Laser treatments is the longer recovery time.

For comparison, it is important to note that non-ablative laser wrinkle treatments stimulate collagen without damaging the superficial skin layers. The advantages include minimal to no downtime and significantly less discomfort compared to CO2 Laser treatments, also known as Carbon Dioxide Lasers. The disadvantages, however, are the need for multiple treatments and the inability to significantly tighten the skin.

Following a CO2 Laser treatment and during the healing phase the skin is rejuvenated, thereby improving facial wrinkles through stimulation of collagen and increasing skin tone. Acne scarring, traumatic scars and chicken pox scars can also be treated and significantly improved using CO2 Laser treatments.

Still unsure about CO2 Laser treatments? Dr. Peter Klainer offers before and after CO2 Laser photos to help you decide.

CO2 Laser treatments Downtime & Discomfort:

The early healing phase lasts 7 to 12 days. At day 12 most people can wear make-up to camouflage the pink healing skin. Patients remain pink for 6 weeks to 3 months after a CO2 Laser treatment. During this healing time it is essential to use good moisturizers and sunscreens with at least an SPF of 30.

CO2 Laser treatments FAQ:

Q: Is there any pain with CO2 Laser treatments?

A: Yes, during the CO2 Laser procedure. This is why it is recommended that the procedure be done under general anesthesia. After the CO2 Laser treatment procedure the greatest discomfort is from swelling, but there is little pain.

Q: Can CO2 Laser treatments be combined with other procedures?

A: If appropriate, CO2 Laser treatments can be used in conjunction with Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty (lower eyelid surgery) to tighten the lower eyelid skin, or with a facelift to improve perioral wrinkles, "crow's feet" or wrinkles of the forehead. CO2 Laser treatments can also used in conjunction with a neck lift if the neck area is of concern to the patient.

Q: How long will CO2 Laser treatment results last?

A: With good post laser skin care and appropriate protection from the sun, results can last for several years.
