Eyelid Surgery Procedure Description:
The eyelids often show the first signs of aging and can give a person a “tired” look. Eyelid Lift Surgery rejuvenates the eyes making them and your overall expression look more youthful and refreshed.
Specifically, Eyelid Lift surgery can treat loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the eyelids, sometimes impairing vision. Eyelid surgery can also eliminate excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids. On the lower eyelids it can eliminate bags under the eyes, excess skin, fine wrinkles and droopiness. Eyelid Lifts are often performed in conjunction with laser resurfacing.
Eyelid Lift surgeries are normally performed in a hospital setting on an outpatient basis. The incisions are carefully positioned according to the condition being corrected to allow the repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and tissue, and/or removal of excess skin as appropriate. In all cases great care is taken to strategically place eyelid surgery incisions in such a way as to make them almost invisible. Dr. Klainer will explain his strategy for your individual condition at your eyelid surgery pre-op consultation.
Occasionally a laser or chemical peel is used to erase dark discoloration of the lower eyelids. During recovery as swelling and bruising subside, the results of your eyelid surgery will gradually appear to reveal smoother, more defined eyelids and surrounding region and a rejuvenated natural appearance. When you go home after eyelid surgery, if you experience any symptoms that concern you, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Klainer immediately.

Eyelid Surgery Downtime & Discomfort:
Before eyelid surgery and for your safety, you may be required to undergo some lab tests or a medical evaluation. For some patients, new medications may need to be introduced or current medications adjusted. All eyelid surgery patients are asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery and avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding. Dr. Klainer will discuss these matters and the type of anesthesia to be used at your eyelid surgery pre-op consultation.
Eyelid Lift surgery is usually an outpatient procedure and most patients can return to work in 5 days. For some eyelid surgery patients some swelling and bruising may persist until days 10 thru 14. Make-up can be used once sutures are removed 4-7 days after surgery.
The degree of discomfort that you can expect from eyelid surgery can be characterized as ‘moderate and very manageable’. You will be given specific post-eyelid surgery instructions that may include how to care for your eyes, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, as well as specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your overall health and when to follow-up with Dr. Klainer.
During your healing process you can expect some swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes and discomfort all of which can be controlled with medication, cold compresses and ointment. You should not hesitate to contact Dr. Klainer should you have any concerns during your recovery from eyelid surgery.
